An Early 20th-Century Mission Church on Sweden’s East Coast for $363,000

In the small village of Hagsta, around 30 kilometers north of Gävle, this stately white Mission Church offers a home unlike anything else on the market. Built in the early 20th century and now more than 100 years old, the characterful building combines a spacious family residence with its original church hall and tower.

The property has undergone several major renovations over the past 15 years and offers a total of approximately 449 square meters.

About 237 square meters have been converted into warm, inviting living spaces, while the original church hall and tower account for a further 212 square meters. Period details have been carefully retained, including several working tiled stoves and wood-burning stoves.

The entrance level is accessible through two halls on the western and eastern sides of the building. The western hall also includes a guest WC. At the heart of the home is a spacious, open-plan kitchen and living room, where large windows bring in plenty of natural light. A traditional tiled stove adds warmth and character to the generous social space.

From here, doors open directly into the impressive former church hall. With its high ceilings, large proportions and distinctive atmosphere, the room could accommodate everything from creative projects and exhibitions to workshops, celebrations or a home-based business.

Both entrance halls provide access to the upper floor, which has two spacious bedrooms, each with a working tiled stove. One of these rooms is currently used as a family room and connects to a combined bathroom and dressing room, as well as the unfinished attic. The attic offers further potential for anyone wishing to expand or adapt the property.

On the lower ground floor, there is an additional bedroom, a family room with a wood-burning stove and a laundry area. A fully tiled bathroom includes a sauna and enjoys views towards the river, creating a peaceful place to unwind.

The outdoor spaces are equally generous. Several terraces face east, north and south, providing places to enjoy the sun at different times of the day. Beside the river, an insulated guest cottage has its own terrace, while the surrounding land provides ample room for gardening, growing vegetables or creating large play areas.

An insulated garage is built into the side of the church and includes an electric-car charger. Despite the building’s age and size, the residential section is designed to be energy-efficient, with geothermal heating helping keep running costs manageable. A house battery charges when electricity prices are low and supplies stored power when prices rise. Fiber-optic broadband is also installed.

The property enjoys a peaceful countryside setting, with nature and the river close at hand, yet central Gävle is about 30 minutes away. The E4 is only a few kilometers away, while the nearest bus stop is around 500 meters from the house. A preschool, a school for grades one to nine, an ICA grocery store, a bakery, and a pizzeria are also found nearby.

For swimming and summer outings, popular Totrabadet is within easy reach, Saltarsfjärden’s coastal bathing area is approximately 10 kilometers away, and a local river swimming spot lies around 2.3 kilometers from the property.

The church is listed for sale at LF Fastighetsförmedling Gävle.
